When it comes
to setting up a bass, all luthiers have the same goal; set up the
instrument for the best possible sound and maximum playability.
Of course, there
are many things that can affect both of these.
Just in the
bridge alone, you have the width of the feet, the thickness of
the feet, their relationship to the bass bar, the length of the
legs, the position of the heart, the thickness of the bridge, the
material of the adjusters, whether of not the bridge is centered
on the top and if it is standing up straight.
All of these
things can affect the sound and eveness of the response.
Then there is
the sound post, the tail-piece and wire, the fingerboard, and of
course, the strings, all major players in tone, projection, and
focus.
By paying equal
attention to all aspects of set-up, you allow your bass to play
and sound to its full potential.
